Town Administrator

The Town of Wrentham, MA (population 11,500) is seeking an experienced leader to serve as Town Administrator (TA) starting on or about January 15, 2018. Wrentham is a quintessential New England town. It is strategically located among and nearly equal distant to Boston, Providence, and Worcester. It has a classic New England governance structure led by a five-member board of selectmen acting as chief executive body for the town and an open town meeting acting as the legislative body. The operating budget for FY 2018 is $43M. The Town Administrator is a strong manager; responsibilities and authorities are well defined in the Town Charter that was enacted in 2014 which can be accessed by selecting this link WrenthamHomeRuleCharter.pdf.. The next Town Administrator will be the first TA hired since the charter was enacted.

Wrentham works hard to maintain and balance its small-town charm with today’s fiscal realities. Wrentham stands at the crossroads of opportunity. It has large tracts of rural and open space, and a wide variety of year-round recreational and cultural activities. It is also home to the Wrentham Outlets, the largest outlet mall in New England which draws millions of worldwide visitors. It has an emerging economic development opportunity on its section of US Route 1 which is bordered on the south by the Plainridge Casino in Plainville and on the north by Patriot Place, home of the Patriots in Foxborough. It is also in the process of transitioning vacant commercial land immediately adjacent to its downtown to complement and enhance a small but thriving town center. The next TA will lead an energetic team working to meet these opportunities.

The ideal candidate must have prior success at collaborative leadership, process improvement, employee mentorship, strategic planning, and building strong leadership/management teams. The candidate must have detailed understanding of municipal finances and be capable of managing from the big picture, as well as being capable of building strong working partnerships with the BOS, the town’s boards/committees/departments, and its citizens. This is a great opportunity for someone who has demonstrated leadership skills and management experience in municipal government or other relevant experience, established a strong leadership and management record, and is seeking new and exciting challenges. Applicants must be able to prove demonstrated prior success with process improvement, the use of performance measurements and data-driven decision making, an emphasis on customer service, and innovation with resourcing.

Qualifications include: experience in a senior municipal management position, such as chief administrative officer, assistant chief municipal officer, or a comparable public/private sector position; and a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a field that directly supports the position’s responsibilities. A relevant advanced degree is preferred, as is ICMA credentialed manager designation. Salary range is $135,000 to $165,000 DOQ. The Town of Wrentham is an equal employment opportunity employer. Application submissions are due by 4 p.m., October 27, 2017. Interested applicants must submit a cover letter, resume, and contact information for three references to: Stephanie Pfieffer, Office of the Board of Selectmen, Wrentham Town Hall 79 South Street, Wrentham, MA, or electronically to This email address is being protected from spambots.
